The Valley Hospital has added state-of-the-art breast MRI coil technology to its Breast Center. Breast MRI services are located at the Luckow Pavilion in Paramus. Call 201-447-8040 for an appointment.

The coil technology, manufactured by Sentinelle Medical, transforms the magnet used during MRI into a system for dedicated breast imaging. The shape of the coil enables radiologists and technologists to customize the equipment to accommodate different breast sizes, making the MRI experience more comfortable for patients. Adjustable coil positioning optimizes the quality of the images taken.

“This technology is incredibly sensitive and produces high-resolution images of the breasts, providing intricate details of breast tissue that aid us in diagnosing and treating patients with breast cancer and other breast diseases says Jaclyn Calem-Grunat, M.D., Director of Breast Imaging at Valley. “This technology is also useful for assessing patients at high risk for developing breast cancer.”

Adding breast MRI services boosts the capabilities of Valley’s Breast Center, says Medical Director and Breast Surgical Oncologist Laura Klein, M.D.

“The acquisition of breast coil technology exemplifies Valley’s investment in building a cutting-edge, multidisciplinary breast care program that encompasses mammography, MRI, and other imaging services; surgical oncology; radiation oncology; chemotherapy; genetic counseling; and complementary therapies,” says Dr. Klein.

Breast MRI studies are used by Drs. Klein and Calem-Grunat and other Valley physicians to:

  • screen patients at high risk for developing breast cancer;
  • evaluate the extent of disease in patients already diagnosed with breast cancer;
  • plan breast cancer surgery;
  • establish the volume of disease and response to treatment in patients undergoing chemotherapy for breast cancer;
  • examine the breasts of patients with dense breast tissue that cannot be fully assessed with mammography; and
  • perform breast biopsies.
