Yoga is a series of gentle and restorative poses, guided relaxation, breathing techniques, and basic meditation. Yoga has been shown to produce measurable physiological changes in the mind/body by promoting a sense of well-being and relaxation. It has especially been known to reduce anxiety and stress. It can also improve strength and flexibility. Chair/wall assist classes are available for those who have difficulty lying down or using a mat.
T’ai Chi Chih
T’ai Chi Chih is a series of 20 simple, slow, gentle, and continuous movements that build upon strength and improve balance. Its goal is to accumulate, balance, and circulate internal energy called “chi” through the meridians (energy pathways) leading to profound physical, mental, and spiritual benefits. This practice is appropriate for all ages and offers no limitation regarding one’s physical condition. Classes are held throughout the year by Dorene Krause, an accredited T'ai Chi Chih instructor.
New courses for beginners start Tuesday, April 30, at 4:30 p.m. and 6:15 p.m.; Wednesday, May 1, at 9 a.m.; and Thursday, May 2, at 9:30 a.m. "Intermediate Classes" will start on Tuesday, April 30, at 1 p.m. (class meets at 2 p.m. on the third Tuesday of the month), and Thursday, May 2, at 4:15 p.m. To register for the intermediate class, students must have completed at least two beginner courses and know all of the movements. Visualization and guided imagery can help tap into inner strengths and other qualities that can empower individuals to cope with life stressors. Participants are lead through the guided imagery and relaxation techniques surrounded by the sounds of soothing music. An individual can learn to relax and work toward reducing, modifying, and/or eliminating pain and other symptoms.
Massage acts directly on the nervous system to activate the opposite of the “fight or flight” stress response. Massage increases circulation and, in turn, cleanses the body of waste products that can make you feel fatigued, combats edema, and bathes your cells in the nutrients needed to repair day-to-day wear and tear. Increased oxygen throughout the body and to the brain also helps to improve your mental alertness. These factors, combined with the sense of well-being that deep relaxation brings, can increase your energy level, improve sleep, and reduce daily stress.
Better nutrition means better outcomes. During private sessions with our Registered Dietitian, personalized nutrition plans are developed to meet an individual’s special needs and long-term goals. Eating a healthier diet will lower the risk of many diseases and other health problems. Better nutrition improves quality of life.
Support groups help participants face stressful situations, learn from others in similar situations, and provide an opportunity to learn about ways to cope and develop inner strength. Current group offerings include: Living with Pancreatic Cancer Group; "Us Too" Prostate Cancer Group; Caring, Sharing, and Learning Breast Cancer Support Group; Metastatic Breast Cancer Support Group; Young Women's Breast Cancer Support Group, and Life After Cancer Support Group. Groups are open to all patients, regardless of where they receive treatment.
